Welcome to the Front Range of Colorado and the Mountains!

This issue of TRAVELHOST will address the urban corridor at the face of the Front Range, stretching from Castle Rock, south, to Boulder County, north, Aurora to the east, and western mountain communities at the west.

So named because, when moving west across the Great Plains, the Front Range is the first group of mountains one encounters. This part of the Rocky Mountains moderates the weather, helping to block the water-carrying storms that batter the western portion of the mountains.

Weather

Many visitors to our area find milder weather than expected. The high-desert climate is generally serene compared to the mountains to the west and the plains further east, but can be very unpredictable. Measurable amounts of snow have fallen in the Denver area as late as early June and as early as September.

Mountain weather is as surprising as it is beautiful. It's always best to plan for wide variations in temperatures during the late spring & summer.

Throughout the state, weather can vary dramatically. Areas a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather at the same time. Extremes in weather systems and temperature can occur.

Population

The Denver-Aurora-Boulder area is estimated, by the U. S. Census Bureau, to be the 14th most populous in the nation. Population was almost 3 million in mid- 2007 with 60% of Coloradans living in this geographical region.

The ethnically diverse population supports business growth and encourages the entrepreneurial spirit of the new west. Coloradans' commitments to the arts and the quality of outdoor play-spaces fund the expansion of all.

Visitors and locals find much to enjoy indoors and outdoors in the diverse area: world-class cuisine, great museums, thriving neighborhoods, a flourishing arts scene, historic buildings and preservation districts.

We encourage you to take advantage of your visit here by experiencing all the region has to offer. When shopping, dining and playing, let your host know you're a visitor and experience the warmth typically offered to old friends.

We're very glad you're here!
