To Palm Springs & The Desert Cities
You've just arrived in the Coachella Valley. Don't worry, you're not lost. Visitors often refer to this area simply as "Palm Springs" after the well-known city at the west end of the valley. In fact, the Coachella Valley comprises nine cities (and several unincorporated areas) stretching approximately 45 miles from the San Bernardino Mountains, east to the Salton Sea. A year-round vacation destination enjoyed by more than 3.5 million annual visitors, the Coachella Valley includes Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio and Coachella.
The population is comprised of approximately 400,000 full-time residents. However, "snow-birds" (part-time residents who reside primarily in northern climates) can cause the population to swell to nearly 600,000 in the winter months. The mountains that surround the valley rise up past 10,000 feet, protecting us from potentially inclement weather coming off the Pacific Ocean. The combined affects of the mountains creating a "rain shadow" and the area's low elevation (below sea level as you move toward the Salton Sea) contribute to the beautiful weather and more than 350 days of sunshine each year.
Besides golf (and there's a lot of that here), visitors can enjoy many activities or simply relax and unwind during their stay. There are several great tour operators who offer sightseeing and adventure tours. Attractions such as the Living Desert and Palm Springs Art Museum offer a fun and educational way to spend the afternoon. Younger children are sure to enjoy the Children's Discovery Museum. Entertainment options are wide and varied including the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies or one of the many performances taking the stage at the McCallum Theatre or a local Casino. And don't forget the many world-class dining and shopping opportunities.
